Getting Ready for the Season

Skippers Notebook – Getting Ready for the Season…

With the astonishingly bad weather that we have been having I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that our thoughts haven’t yet turned to the new season’s boating, but that lovely sunny weekend is just around the corner (I promise!!).

I thought it would be worth talking about those pre-season checks so that when that sunny day arrives we can all get straight out on the water…

Some of you will have seen these before so I apologise if I’m repeating myself but better safe than sorry.

Especially at this time of year it is vital that we thoroughly check our boats before heading off on our first trip.  Winter always takes it’s toll on our pride and joy and it is likely that we have used our boats less, if at all, in the last few months.

Many checks we can do ourselves but some may be left to a qualified engineer depending on our skill level and enthusiasm for the task.  If in doubt get someone to check.

My particular concerns at this time of year include a good look at: tightness and alignment of engine mounts, shaft couplings and shaft seals, as well as checking the gas system is in good condition and the gas certificate is in date.  Carbon-monoxide and gas alarms are essential in boats, let’s make sure they’re working.

Some time ago I wrote an article on boat checks which may help, you can download it below along with some check and maintenance sheets.

Please feel free to drop me an email or contact Seaward direct for any help you might need.

Happy boating and safe passage…

Angus
